TO DESTROY TOWN – 80 years of Brandnacht: The destruction of Darmstadt in World War II
Darmstadt is...Life
Description
11:48 p.m.: Christmas trees in the west
Nobody had expected the attack of September 11/12, 1944: Bombers coming from the west marked their target area with red and green flares and dropped their cargo over the city according to a new strategy; successful from their point of view: “A quiet trip all round” - a mission without any special incidents. Darmstadt was on fire.
All that remained of the historic half-timbered town and former baroque and classical beauty of the capital and royal seat were ruins, rubble, debris and ashes. Over 90% of the city center was destroyed and more than 10,000 people lost their lives. On a route through the modern city center, we follow the events of that night in 1944.
