Darmstadt's last Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig was born over 150 years ago. Darmstadt and Hesse owe him a great deal: he founded the artists' colony on the Mathildenhöhe, had the State Museum built, granted the Technical University the right to award doctorates and encouraged the Opel brothers to build cars. A tour from the birthplace to the Mathildenhöhe.
