A forgotten awakening: Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig, Rabindranath Tagore and the ‘School of Wisdom’
Darmstadt is...Culture
Description
It is hardly known today that after the end of the artists' colony with the outbreak of the First World War, Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig supported another project in the early 1920s: the “School of Wisdom”. He succeeded in winning over Hermann Graf Keyserling, who came to Darmstadt. Keyserling's work “Travel Diary of a Philosopher” was a bestseller after the First World War, as many people were looking for new ways and explanations to understand the catastrophe of the world war. In June 1921, the Bengali philosopher, poet, musician and Nobel Prize winner Rabindranath Tagore came to Darmstadt and made for a sensational and eventful few days. One year before the publication of Hermann Hesse's successful novel “Siddharta”, ways inspired by non-European influences were already being discussed in Darmstadt.
The two-hour walk begins in front of the Wedding Tower and ends in front of the State Theater. On the way, we will pass several stations that are important for the history of the “School of Wisdom”.
