Der Hochzeitsturm – das Wahrzeichen Darmstadts auf der Mathildenhöhe

Darmstadt is...Culture

Description

Darmstadt's landmark is the 48.5-metre-high Wedding Tower, which stands on the Mathildenhöhe. The architect Joseph Maria Olbrich designed the brick tower, which was completed in 1908, on behalf of the city of Darmstadt as a gift to commemorate the wedding of Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig to Princess Eleonore zu Solms-Hohensolms-Lich on February 2, 1905. The five final arches of the roof, which are reminiscent of an outstretched hand, are striking, which is why it is also known as the “five-finger tower”. When it was founded in 1983, the Förderkreis Hochzeitsturm e. V. set itself the goal of preserving and revitalizing the Darmstadt landmark. The renovation of the tower rooms and staircase began gradually from 1984. Weddings have been held in the wedding tower since 1993. Visit the Wedding Tower - with a view of the Prince's Room, the Wedding Room and a visit to the viewing platform. Meeting point: Infopoint Mathildenhöhe (Olbrichweg 10, h_da parking lot)* Duration: 60 minutes
