Big names such as Erich Heckel, Alexej von Jawlensky, Ida Kerkovious, and Max Pechstein lend the collection its charisma and represent central figures of German Expressionism with its artist groups “Der Blaue Reiter” and “Brücke.” Rarely exhibited artists such as Erma Bossi, Elisabeth Epstein, and Ilona Singer, as well as important sculptures by Ernst Barlach, Gerhard Marcks, Marg Moll, and Milly Steger, complement this outstanding collection of works. The exhibition reflects on the eventful history of the Museum Wiesbaden's “Classical Modernism Department,” which has been built up over more than a hundred years and whose scope and quality have been enhanced by donations and endowments. In the process, museum work is made visible and the secrets behind these significant additions to the collection are revealed.
