Originally a Capuchin monastery, it was converted in 1809 into the spa town's first grand hotel, based on the plans of classical architect and pioneering spa designer Friedrich Weinbrenner. It was one of the earliest luxury hotels in Europe. After an expansion in the 1990s in the then-splendid grand hotel style-still clearly visible today-its latest incarnation also plays in the top league. Architecturally, the almost entirely preserved monumental staircase hall with its 18 wooden colossal columns is spectacular. The thermal water fountain in the hotel's park-like garden, a "three-bowl fountain," is one of the city's landmarks-on cold days, steam rises visibly from it.
