Description

BREMENS BIG CHURCH
In the 1970s, Bremen's St Peter's Cathedral was to be fitted with an underground heating system, for which purpose the floor of the church was opened up in a large-scale construction site. What was found on this occasion was breathtaking: during the Middle Ages, it had been customary to bury bishops and other dignitaries inside the church in their richly decorated official robes. The dry climate of the cathedral built on a sand dune, which was also responsible for the mummification of the famous lead cellar corpses, had also preserved these textiles embroidered with gold and pearls amazingly well.

In the semi-darkness of two air-conditioned rooms, these finds, which in addition to the aforementioned textiles also consist of episcopal insignia such as rings and croziers, are presented.

Other rooms display Christian art from the Middle Ages to modern times. The focus here is on late medieval sculptures on the one hand and 16th century altarpieces on the other.

In addition, the museum offers an overview of the cathedral's 1000-year building history and documents the building's eventful appearance with contemporary depictions, plans and reconstructions; text and display panels also explain the role that Bremen Cathedral plays in Bremen's and European church history.
