H11 - World Heritage tour: the waterworks at the Hochablass

Tours about Augsburg’s Hist. Water Management

Description

As early as the middle of the 19th century Augsburg became an industrial town with an enormous population growth due to the driving-force of the Lech and Wertach canals. It was then when the water-towers of the waterworks along the eastern city-walls were not sufficient for the drinking water supply of Augsburg any longer. The foundation of  the modern water-system was finally laid when the waterworks located at the Hochablass in the Siebentischwald was put into operation in 1879. The technology of the “Maschinenfabrik Augsburg”, which hides behind the neo-Renaissance facade of the waterworks, attracted attention throughout Europe and still fascinates the visitors today. Please note: you cannot reach the waterworks by car as it lies in a protected zone, you have to walk about 700 metres.
