FR08 - The Foundations of Augsburg, Charity through the Centuries
City of Peace Tours

Description
During the Middle Ages charitable endowments and foundations were popular primarily for religious reasons. They were seen as a way to secure the salvation of ones soul, be remembered or simply do good in this world. And until the present day making donations for charitable purposes has remained relevant.
About 75% of all charitable foundations in Germany came into being after 1990.Exploring the streets and alleyways of the city of Augsburg you will be introduced to many examples of this great tradition.
Over the course of this tour our guests get to know foundations such as that of St. Moritz, the Fugger-Houses or the benefice of St. Anton´s to name just a few. At the heart of our tour lies a destination that will in 2021 have been founded exactly 500 years ago by Jakob Fugger: The Fuggerei.
Even today you can you can get an apartment here for three prayers a day and a yearly cold rent as low as 88 Eurocent – a modern representation of the historical renting price, which in Jakob´s day would have been one Rhine Guilder. Yet we will not only be looking to the past, we will also be exploring new present day foundations and the idea of charity in the 21st century, introducing our guests to a wealth of options and possibilities.
